William Pye - Water Sculpture

As a result of a competition organised by the Public Art Commissions Agency, William Pye was invited by Derby City Council to create a water sculpture, which is now the centrepiece of the refurbished Marketplace. A York stone structure supports a semicircular cascade of free-falling water, which pours over a bronze weir that has a green patina.
There is sufficient room behind the translucent curtain of water for visitors to experience the sensation of walking behind a waterfall.
Derby Cascade is 3.5 metres high and 12 metres in diameter. It was the first project on which William Pye collaborated with Terry Pawson of TPA. Working closely with imaginative architects and engineers has enabled Pye to expand to a great degree the scope and scale of the projects he undertakes.
