Description:
The proportions of the rose garden at Clinton Lodge suggested to me a linear piece and I was immediately put in mind of that amazing feature at Villa Lante in Italy known as 'The Cardinals Table'. As soon as I saw the site enclosed by the high yew hedges, I realised that the position of the flower beds was such that one would get no distant views of the feature, which would have to be approached around the side and seen laterally from one side to the other at close quarters. When I explained this to the client she very generously invited me to redesign the layout of the whole garden.
The piece is in patinated bronze and is 6 metres long. I used the device I have developed for dividing a film of water into a curtain of falling threads. Tavoleau exploits reflection of the the surrounding trees and flowers with both distant and close up views.
