William Pye Water Scupture

Floating globe

A mirror polished stainless steel hemisphere rises in the centre of a square plinth of polished black granite over a Bath stone base. Water emerging at the apex of the dome forms rollwave patterns down over its outer surface, caused by surface tension. The water disappears into a narrow slot at the base of the dome.

The hemisphere and its reflection in the shiny black granite create the illusion of a complete sphere floating in space, and the reflected image of the descending ripples creates the illusion of other ripples rising to meet them.
